Bible Readings and Prayer Points
(Submitted by Sam and Ann MacDonald)
I am continuing to glean these meditations from the late Selwyn Hughes magazine- ‘Every day with Jesus’ and his notes on Revelation.
Wednesday 1st May
The rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues still did not repent, nor did they stop worshipping demons and idols. Rev 9: 20.
Although there are 7 trumpets to be heard, the sixth is the last one to herald a warning to the inhabitants of earth. It releases further warnings of God’s wrath against sin, made in response to His people’s prayers that evil should not go unpunished and that justice might prevail. He urges that men should cease from worshipping things which cannot save them and worship Him and Him alone.
Give thanks for the many medical facilities freely available to us in Scotland, pray for those who work hard in the NHS to provide high standard healthcare and are often under great stress from their jobs. Pray for Donald MacVicar taking the prayer meetings today that sharing God’s Word midweek and engaging in earnest prayer, would be a real blessing to all attending.
Thursday 2nd May
When the 7 thunders spoke, I was about to write but the Voice from heaven said, ‘Seal up what the 7 thunders have said and do not write it down’. Rev 10:4.
Before the 7th trumpet is blown, John records another theme which the importance and power of Godly witness stresses. We are encouraged to be bold in the way we tell others of our Lord and Saviour and the wonderful work He has done, so that we may be saved. John is told to eat the small scroll that he took from the angel’s hand. This would seem to be a hint for us that when we study God’s word, we should do it earnestly.
Give thanks for those who have agreed to serve on our Nominating Committee and pray that they will be swiftly led to the person God’s has already chosen. Pray that the chosen person would continue to preach and teach the whole of the Gospel. Pray for all attending the Mother and Toddler group today that they would enjoy the time spent together.
Friday 3rd May
I was given a reed like a measuring rod and was told to go and measure the temple and the altar and count the worshippers there. Rev 11: 1.
This is one of the most fascinating and puzzling chapters in the whole of Revelations for it presents us with a picture of God’s people being assured in spirit. The image of the temple being measured can be taken that our work and witness does not go unnoticed by God. Here we find that clear lines are marked against the world and its evil ways and how the devil will try to influence us with his ways. We are also assured that where two or three come together in Jesus Name, He will be in their midst. It is wonderful to know that in the midst of this chaotic world, we have a place where we can go to and be assured of God’s guiding hand.
Give thanks for the ongoing success of In Their Lifetime (ITL) Christian Aid projects in Africa, India, and South America. Pray that we would be generous in our support of Christian Aid and remember those who work in difficult areas of the world trying to improve lives and prospects for those who have so little.
Saturday 4th May
I will give power to my two witnesses and they will prophesy for 42 months. If anyone tries to harm them, fire will come from their mouths and devour their enemies. Rev 11: 3-5.
These two witnesses are identified as representing God’s law which is treated with contempt, as it is in many areas of the world today. But it is sure that they speak with great power, being able to close up the sky from shedding rain, strike plagues on the earth, and stand up against the ruling powers of the day, for they are backed by both heaven and earth. We can therefore be sure that as we study God’s law and Word, and apply it to our witness, we will be telling the world the way that God desires for us to live.
Give thanks for the freedom we have, so far, to attend church without fear of persecution, and that we have free access to Bibles and Christian literature. Pray for those who meet to worship God secretly, and in fear, that they would be blessed with courage to continue even in difficult circumstances. Pray for Christians all over the world who have been imprisoned and tortured for proclaiming Christ as their Saviour.
Sunday 5th May
When these witnesses had finished their testimony they were attacked by Satan’s representative from the Abyss, but they were put to death for only a short time. Rev 11: 1. and onwards.
It is clear that people of the world have always sought to replace God’s truth with worldly reasoning. People now insist that much of the world takes the view that God’s ways are not the only way to be assured of eternal life. As we are told of these 2 witnesses being called up to heaven, and they experience that Jesus reigns and although the work of Christian witness may be overpowered on many occasions, it rises again in the ways of reformation and revival.
Continue to give thanks for those who have been unwell and are now on the road to recovery. Pray too for those struggling with chronic conditions which limit their enjoyment of life. Give thanks for organisations like Marie Curie care and Highland Hospice and for the professionals and volunteers who work tirelessly to enable people to deal with their final days with dignity. Pray for Rev Trevor Hunt and Iain Macdonald as they break down God’s Word at the services today, that we would have eager ears to hear what God has given them to tell us.
Monday 6th May
Now we hear that as these witnesses were called to heaven, there was a severe earthquake and much damage occurred and many people killed. Rev 11: 13.
This ensures that as God’s true Word is proclaimed to His own people, they will know they will never be forgotten. The messages that are sounded by the first 6 trumpets are given to alert the world of the judgements which will be delivered from God. It is sure that God is not vindictive as He delivers these messages of holiness but is full of mercy. He is not willing that anyone should perish and gives us every opportunity to turn from the evil ways which have been established by Satan, and cling instead to His Holiness.
Give thanks for all you give their time and talents to work with, and teach the children and young people in the East, that they may be upheld and inspired as they prepare lessons and activities. Pray for the planned Youth Outreach event and for those who will take responsibility for its organisation. Pray that people would be motivated to come and that any who do not know Jesus as Lord would be persuaded to learn more and give their lives to Christ.
Tuesday 7th May
Then the 7th trumpet sounded, and loud voices were heard in heaven which declared, ‘Now the kingdom of the earth has become the Kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ’. Rev 11: 15.
When the sounding of the 7th trumpet was heard, it shows us the final display of God’s majesty and God presents His Son with the answer to those who pray, ‘Thy kingdom Come’. One day we will see a day when that great Kingdom will surely come to pass. These verses bring an end to this part of John’s vision, as he sees more of what it means when Jesus’ rule and reign are established and we are left with the promise that one day all that is presently wrong in creation will be put right, and God will make everything perfect, as He intended it should be.
Give thanks for the beautiful part of the country that we live in and for the many glories of God’s creation all around us. Pray for the many people who come to enjoy Inverness and its surrounding area but fail to acknowledge the Creator. Pray too for those whose failing eyesight prevents the full appreciation of where they live, help us to give thanks if we have eyes to see God’s glory.
Wednesday 8th May
A great and wonderous sign appeared in Heaven, a woman who was clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of 12 stars on her head. She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth. Rev 12:1.
A pregnant woman appears who is said to represent God’s church and also a fierce dragon comes into view who is a representative of evil and is sent to clash between heaven and earth. The male child who is born is surely identified as Jesus for it was snatched up to heaven and its throne. Now there was war in heaven and Michael and his angels fought against the dragon and his evil hordes and Michael won and hurled the dragon to earth and proclaimed that now the power and salvation of God have been established.
Give thanks for all those who carry out tasks in the church which go largely unseen and yet are vital to the smooth running of the services and the building. Pray for Iain Macdonald leading the two prayer meetings today that all would be encouraged in the message preached and that those attending would be bold in prayer time to give thanks and intercede for matters laid on their hearts.
Thursday 9th May
Now has come the salvation and the power of our God, for the accuser of our brothers has been hurled down and he is filled with fury. Rev 12:10 onwards.
The woman represents God’ people, while the dragon is Satan who is bent on the overthrow of Jesus’ Kingdom. He has been engaged in this warfare ever since the fall, when he persuaded Adam and Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, but he has been defeated by Christ on the cross. It is clear that there are two kingdoms reigning on earth, the kingdom of the world and the Kingdom of God. How blessed we are that we are able to have our bibles available to study so that we can be sure which Kingdom’s rules to follow.
Give thanks for the work of Tear Fund, particularly in the work they support and undertake in areas of the world where waste plastic threatens the homes and livelihoods of poverty ridden people. Pray that all nations would cooperate to eliminate such waste and enable us to hand a clean and viable future to our children and grandchildren. Pray too for those attending the Mother and Toddler group and for those willing to give their time to assist.
Friday 10th May
The dragon was enraged and went off to wage war against the rest of humanity, those who obey God’s commandments and the testimony of Jesus. Rev 12:17.
Since none of his plans have been successful, the devil seeks another strategy, and he finds help from the influence of kingdoms, such as the power of the Roman empire. This influence is depicted as coming from the sea and the land. The one from the sea seems fearsome, resembling a leopard, a bear and a lion, but is nothing more than a creature made up of animal parts which seeks to win authority over God’s people. Christians however are called to uphold all that is right for we serve our risen King -Jesus.
Give thanks for all those in the congregation who have served the East Church for many years but are now not as fit as they once were. Ask that they would be aware of the heritage that they have established in the Church and pray that they would be upheld in the latter years of their earthly lives. Make us willing as a family to help them in practical ways, as well as in prayer support.
Saturday 11th May
The dragon gave the beast power and his greatest authority, and it opened its mouth to blaspheme God. Rev 13:2 onwards.
The beast from the sea is a striking example of political struggles, but Jesus came to establish the Kingdom of God and as Christians that is our first allegiance. When other laws clash with God’s laws, we must answer to His higher authority. Our trust must be in the blood of the Lamb and we are to stay faithful to Him. Help us, dear Lord to maintain our trust in You and in the atoning blood which You shed for us on the cross.
Give thanks for the tireless service provided to us by June and Andrew McGowan and ask that they would be granted many years of happy family life as a couple and with their extended family. Pray for those who this Saturday night will be out in the city seeking satisfaction for their bodies and souls that they would realise that it is Christ they are seeking. Pray protection for all who try to help them like Street Pastors, Police and Medical crews.
Sunday 12th May
Then I saw another beast coming from the land, it had 2 horns like a lamb and spoke like the dragon and performed great and miraculous signs. Rev 13:12.
This section shows that the way of the beast from the sea is to kill off all opposition, while the way of the followers of the Lamb is to endure against such evil. However though the beast from the land looked like a lamb it had the voice of the dragon and so betrays its origin, and thus we can be sure that it is more of Satan’s sinful words to try and defeat the power of Jesus. John shows how we can be protected from such evil messages by proclaiming the number of the evil one, for in these days it was dangerous to speak against Emperor Nero and he was called 666. Thus, John gave the news that the source of these ills was just as bad as Nero and his evil worship. The number 666 was chosen, because in these ancient days, leaders had the letters of their names translated into numbers using a system known as gematria and Emperor Nero’s total was 666. Since he was a particular persecutor of Christians he was referred to as 666, and so have such evil regimes which followed. (Gematria was able to transfer Hebrew into Aramaic making it hard to be understood by Greeks and Romans).
Give thanks for those who have been so willing to fulfil pulpit supply during the vacancy period. Pray that they would be aware of God’s prompting as they prepare the Word and praise, and that they would have a real sense of peace that passes understanding if they are anxious over their task. Pray too for Douglas Horne as he continues to lead us in the story of Joseph. Pray too for Rev KD Macleod leading the afternoon service in Gaelic, that the message delivered in this ancient tongue would be a blessing to those worshipping and listening on the website.
Monday 13th May
Then I looked and there before me was a Lamb standing on Mount Zion and with Him 144,000 who had His Name and His Father’s Name written on their foreheads. Rev 14:1.
We have been reading how the trinity of evil, the dragon, and the beasts from the sea and the land, form an alliance to vie against God’s Kingdom. Now we are shown the trinity of those who fight for God. The most important is the Lamb who leads in worship and in a world where political ideologies clash with the interests of God’s Kingdom, nothing can defeat Satan better than worship of God.
Give thanks for those who lead our worship each Sunday, music group members and organists, who are so willing to share their gifts and talents to assist in our praise of God. As a church family we also need to acknowledge those who wrote the great hymns of old but also embrace new items of praise which allow us to lift our hearts and voices to our God in heartfelt, thankful praise.
Tuesday 14th May
I saw another angel flying in mid air and he had the eternal Gospel to proclaim to every nation, tribe, people and language and he said in a loud voice, ‘Fear God and give Him glory’ Rev 14:6-7.
We are now introduced to 3 flying angels and they are identified as God’s messengers who will proclaim 3 differing statements. The first is salvation by grace, the second tells of rebellion against God and the third declares that those who follow that rebellion will perish in the same downfall when Satan is defeated. Preaching is the Gospel of God being proclaimed, the downfall of all who resist Him is announced and we are called to repent of going astray as we so often do.
Give thanks for those in local and national government who profess to be Christians or who at least display integrity. Pray earnestly for all involved in the Brexit process, that they all would realise that the task in hand must be handled with truthfulness and that they would set aside their own egos. Pray too that God’s wisdom and will would prevail.
Wednesday 15th May
I looked and there before me was a white cloud and seated on the cloud was one like a son of man with a crown of gold on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand. Rev 14: 14.
In the passage before us today we see one like a Son of Man, who can be taken to mean Christ, sending His angels to reap. This is a picture of the end times when the ungodly will perish. How many of us realise that every day God is at work in all our lives to deepen our devotion and develop our love of Him. This is greatly encouraging as we become more and more aware that God is planting seed which will either develop into holiness or the wrath of God.
Give thanks for the work of African Inland mission (A.I.M.) and those who have worked hard in medical and educational projects for this organisation. Pray for peace in many of the areas where they work, and that God’s protection would be on any working in dangerous situations. Pray too for Bill Flett taking the prayer meetings today, and that the Word would be proclaimed. Pray that people would be really encouraged to take the time to attend this power house of God’s work in the East.
Thursday 16th May
I saw in heaven another marvellous sign, 7 angels holding the 7 last plagues -last, because with them God’s wrath is completed. Rev 15:1.
So far in Revelations we have seen 7 seals, 7 trumpets and 7 visions, then 7 angels with their 7 plagues from 7 bowls all indicating that God’s ways are paramount and exceed anything that Satan can devise. This introduces us to the next theme of this book -divine judgement, for the affairs of God can only be understood when we are at worship and we can be assured of deliverance from the power and penalty of sin.
Give thanks for those who have installed, and are working with the Computer and Sound system, and for the improvement it makes to many aspects of worship, especially to any who have hearing problems. Pray for all those who will be attending the Gathering today that there will be a sense of real Christian fellowship. Pray especially today for any who may be lonely, due to lack of friends or bereavement, that God would comfort them and lay on our hearts a real need to care for others.
Friday 17th May
Then one of the 4 living creatures gave to the 7 angels, 7 golden bowls filled with the wrath of God and the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God. Rev 15:7.
The temple comes into view again but this time it is filled with smoke symbolising the glory of God. From this place of awesome holiness, the 7 angels with their bowls of God’s justice set out to dispense His wrath. The 1st angel pours forth a plague of painful sores, the 2nd empties his bowl in to the sea so that it turns to blood, and the 3rd into the rivers so they also develop into blood. This tells us that those who prevent God’s people from worshipping Him will receive His judgement, as did the Egyptians.
Give thanks for the girls and leaders who so loyally attend and organise the Girls’ Brigade, and for the parents who faithfully bring their girls. Pray that this work would continue to bring girls to a saving knowledge of Jesus as their Saviour and that as a congregation we would be praying for all of this work regularly. Pray for tonight’s meeting of the Youth Group that there would be a sense of fun and fellowship in sharing the truths of Christian living.
Saturday 18th May
The forth angel poured his bowl on the sun and it was given power to scorch people with fire and they cursed the name of God, but they refused to repent. Rev 16:8.
Today we see what happens when the remaining angels pour out their bowls of wrath. The 4th angel empties his bowl into the sun, and it is given power to scorch the inhabitants of the earth who are preventing His worship, but they do not repent. The 5th angel pours his bowl of wrath on the throne of the beast and the beast was plunged into darkness but did not repent, the 6th into the great river causing it to dry up and the 7th poured his bowl into the air, whereupon a mighty battle takes place when the forces of evil face their destruction.
Give thanks for all the work of E.M.M.S. and for all the support and funds that have been raised for its various projects over the years. Pray especially for the Mziche project in Malawi which offers H.I.V. positive mothers’ treatment and support so that they can have babies who are born H.I.V negative and can go on to have healthy lives. Pray for safety and enjoyment for all those who will take part in the Black Isle Bike Ride today to raise funds for E.M.M.S. and Birchwood Highland.
Sunday 19th May
Then the angel carried me away in the Spirit into a desert and there I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered with blasphemous names. Rev 17: 3.
We are drawn now to one of the most obscure section of this great book, when God rises up to defeat the powers of evil. Our attention is drawn once more to when the bowls of these plagues are emptied, God’s wrath is also finished. We are told that the woman on the beast is overthrown and judgement takes place so that worship can again be enacted, and that God takes the highest honour. The great city of Babylon is mentioned in symbolism to indicate that those people of the world who do not give honour to God will perish as did the kingdoms of the world in the time of John.
Give thanks for those who look after the young ones in the creche every Sunday, allowing parents a little free time to attend the church service and hear God’s Word. Pray for Douglas Horne and Hector Morrison who will lead worship today, giving thanks for their willingness to step into the gap during the vacancy. Pray that we will know God’s presence as we praise God and listen to His message for us.
Monday 20th May
I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of the saints and when I saw her, I was astonished but the angel said to me, I will explain to you the mystery of the woman and the beast she rides. Rev 17:7.
The image that is shown to us is intended to open our eyes to how terrible the influence of a Godless world is. When 7 heads and 10 horns are mentioned they are symbolic of the destructive tendencies we meet in everyday life and we must guard against the deceiver who is at work throughout the world for he seeks to attract people away from the worship of God. That is clearly evident in church attendance in our day, for numbers going to church are being depleted each year.
Give thanks for the new life that we see all around in the fields and in our gardens and help us to never take the changing of the seasons for granted but thank our Lord for His supreme control over everything. Pray for anyone suffering for mental health problems, that healing would come, and they wouldn’t suffer in silence but reach out to agencies who can help. Ask that as a church family we would be compassionate to those who so need our help and understanding.
Tuesday 21st May
After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven and he had great authority. The earth was illuminated by his splendour and he shouted with a loud voice ‘Fallen, fallen is Babylon the Great, for she has become a home of demons. Rev 18:1-2.
Here it is made clear to Christians, that the evil which has become rife throughout our world will come to an end, for Christ has defeated Satan at Calvary. He will be dispatched to hell and that is the destination of all who have ignored the invitation which Christ has established for all who truly believe in Him. Another angel takes up a huge boulder and casts it into the sea, which suddenly becomes calm. When the battle was raging and all was undergoing destruction there was great noise, now all is calm and peaceful.
Give thanks for all the outreach which has taken place over the years in our congregation, for the work undertaken in Raigmore, at the Shack and through Open Doors. Pray that all this work would continue to bear fruit and that those taking part would be encouraged to keep on going on. Pray that each of us would take every opportunity to tell folk of the reason for our hope.
Wednesday 22nd May
After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude in heaven shouting ‘Hallelujah, Salvation and Glory and Power belong to our God’. Rev 19: 1.
Although it says that Hallelujahs sounded in heaven, in this chapter it tells us of 4 separate hallelujahs. The first celebrates God who is just, the second celebrates the destruction of evil sources, the third hallelujah is expressed by the 24 elders and the forth is declared by Christian worshipers in response to a call for worship from the throne. This worship is the call to come to the wedding of the Lamb when Christ will be joined with His bride- His Church of worshippers on earth.
Give thanks today for the young people we have in our church family and help us to encourage and protect them. Pray for those who have passed through Sunday School, Ark and Youth Fellowship over the years, that the Word planted in their hearts would bear fruit in their lives as they grow, and that many would remember what they were taught in the stressful times in their lives. Pray for Ian Challinor taking the prayer meetings that he would be given a message that we need to hear and that all attending would experience a need to share in public prayer without traditional inhibitions.
Thursday 23rd May
I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True and His Name is The Word of God. Rev 19: 11.
The theme of judgement came to an end with chapter 19 and verse 8 and now we hear about the end of all things. John is asked to write about how blessed those are who have been invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb, but the action taking place moves from the wedding feast to a war, when Jesus mounted on a white horse leads the armies of heaven into battle to destroy the beast and the false prophet. So we learn that evil will be eliminated, as was promised even from the earliest chapters of the Bible.
Give thanks that we have the Word of God in our own language, freely available both in hard copy and on-line. Pray for those who use their skills to translate the message of salvation into many languages so that all may be able to read and understand. Continue to pray for all attending the Mother and Toddler group that their time together would be a blessing and that more would be encouraged to join them.
Friday 24th May
And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key of the Abyss. He seized the dragon who is identified as Satan and bound him for a thousand years and threw him into the Abyss, locking him there for that time. Rev 20: 1-2.
In this passage we read that Satan is bound up for 1000 years, so perhaps we should try to find what might be the explanations of this period of time. Let us remember that with God, 1000 years are like a day and a day is as 1000 years. Generally speaking there are 3 views which commentators are divided on, and the first says that Jesus will come again before this period begins. The second group hold to the view that Jesus will not come until this long period has ended and the third believe that the period is not literal but symbolic. The main point is that this time is said to be peaceful and since our world is full of chaos even now, it is in no way peaceable and therefore this time of peace has not yet come.
Give thanks today for our climate, for the fact that we have sufficient clean water readily available from our taps. Pray for countries whose climate is such that they have no access to clean water, or their homes and livelihoods have been devastated by floods as in Mozambique and Malawi earlier this year. Give thanks for organisations like Water Aid who provide water pumps, allowing fresh water to be available in remote villages.
Saturday 25th May
When the 1000 years are over, Satan will be released from the Abyss and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth and surrounded God’s people, but the devils’ hordes were thrown into the lake of burning sulphur. Rev 20: 7 – 10.
After the 1000 years is over, Satan is released from imprisonment and is permitted to deceive the nations for a short time, but his invading army is defeated, and Satan is thrown into hell. Following this, all humanity will be called to judgement in books which have recorded the deeds we have committed, whether good or bad and another book which is known as the book of life, wherein is written the names of all who have trusted in the saving work of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Give thanks for those who organise and prepare the beautiful flower arrangements for Church services and for those who keep the building so clean and tidy. Pray that those who receive the flowers will know that they are given in love and remembrance from the church family for whatever situation they are facing, happy or sad. Pray for all who will be preparing services for Sunday throughout the world so that the Name of the Lord would be high and lifted up by many.
Sunday 26th May
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away and there was no longer any sea. Rev 21: 1.
The Bible starts with the creation of the earth and now it ends with us introduced to a new creation. The new heaven is dazzling in description but we are told that God has brought order to this new heaven and this time there is no evil to destroy it, for any cleansing has been achieved on the cross by the sacrifice of Jesus in obedience to God, and we must always give thanks for His love in providing the way for our redemption.
Give thanks to all who undertake Sunday duties as Church Beadle, giving a welcome, attending doors and finance duties. Pray that anyone coming to Church, whether as a regular worshipper or a visitor would be made to feel welcome and that we would overcome any shyness and be willing to talk to new people and ensure that they feel at home with us. Pray for Hector Morrison leading worship today, that the Word and the praise would be a blessing to us and glorify our God.
Monday 27th May
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, Now the dwelling of God is with men and He will live with them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes and there will be no more death or mourning or pain for the old order has passed away. Rev 21: 3 – 4.
We continue following John’s great description of future joy and blessing and this is breathtakingly exciting for even the new city is awash with light. When God created the universe He said, ’Let there be light’ and there was light and now at the end of this present world there is light, but not from the sun, as we are told that the glory of God will be our source of light. Again, we hear that He who was seated on the throne told John to write all that he had been told of this new city and its appearance and its dimensions. How we long for that great day when we will meet Him face to face.
Give thanks that we worship a God who does not expect anything from us except that we believe in Him. There is nothing that we can do or say that would enable us to have our sins forgiven, or to attain eternity in glory, but we give thanks that He gave us the Way in providing His only Son to be the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. Pray today for so many lost souls who strive, through their religion to please their God and are blind to the truths of Your Good News. Pray that the day would soon come when every knee will bow to the only true God.
Tuesday 28th May
He who overcomes will inherit all this and I will be his God and he will be my son. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile and all liars – their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulphur. This is the second death. Rev 21: 7 – 8.
Now we hear that the wall which surrounds the city has 12 gates on which are written the names of the Apostles and each gate is made of a single pearl. It is interesting to know that each pearl as it is formed by a worm or grain of sand piercing the shell of an oyster. If there was no wound, there would be no pearl. We can therefore see that the pearl gates are symbolic of the pain our Lord endured for us on Calvary’s cross. If we don’t understand the reason for the cross, we will not enter the new Jerusalem.
Give thanks for all who have been given the skills to undertake medical research and be able to discover cures or methods to alleviate disease and suffering. Pray for integrity in this type of work that the line that divides right and wrong would not be breached and that God’s hand would be over every aspect of this work. Pray for the Word at One service and for Iain Macdonald who will lead worship. Pray that those who pass the Church at this time would be encouraged to come in and that they would be made welcome and hear a Word to help them forward to faith in God.
Wednesday 29th May
No longer will there be any curse, for the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the City and His servants will serve Him. Rev 22: 3.
We are told that a clear river flows from the city of God and it suggests plenteous life and fertility. On either side of the river is the tree of life which yields its fruit every month. Does this picture not tell us that we will be dependent on God in eternity just as we are on this earth. We are also told that the leaves of trees are for the healing of the nations and so we discern where the absence of illness comes from in the new Jerusalem. What a truly wonderful prospect awaits those who trust in Jesus in this earth when we are told what our end will be.
Continue to pray earnestly for those on the nominating committee as they would be encouraged in their task and not find the duty tiring or overwhelming. Help us as a church family to support them in any way possible. Give thanks for carers and care homes who look after the elderly with respect and compassion. Pray that anyone who has recently had to give up their own home and move into care would know Your everlasting arms around them as they adjust to change. Pray for Alex Stephen taking the prayer meetings today that many would attend and that a sense of God’s presence would be apparent in the Word preached and, in the prayers uttered.
Thursday 30th May
The angel said to me, these words are trustworthy and true, for the Lord has sent His angel to show His servants the things that must soon take place. Rev 22: 6.
As the vision comes to an end, John falls at the feet of the revealing angel in an attitude of worship and is reprimanded for doing so, as the angel tells John to worship only God. How sad it is when we find ourselves caught up worshipping the preacher rather than what he preaches. However blessed, encouraged and uplifted we are by reading the words of this book, nearly 2000 years after they were written, they still speak to us to encourage us to do right, to worship our Lord and continue to do good.
Give thanks for the lovely city we live in and for the many visitors who are attracted each year. Pray for all types of outreach over the holiday period and that visitors would feel welcome to come into the city churches and find real peace and a sense of God’s presence. Pray too for decisions made at the Church’s General Assembly that the Church of Scotland as a denomination might be convicted of its sin and strive to return to the whole of scripture teaching, so that this land might again be known as the land of the Book.
Friday 31st May
Behold, I am coming soon! I will give to everyone according to what he has done, for I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last. Blessed are those who wash their robes so that they may have the right to go into the city. Rev 22:12-14.
Revelations ends as it begins with Jesus. Now He promises that He is coming soon, but for whom is He coming? We are told that only those who have washed their robes in the blood that Jesus shed on Calvary, only they can enter the pearly gates of the Holy City. John warns us not to tamper with what is written in this book. All that He proclaims as ‘Coming soon’ will happen as it has been declared and men will be fixed in their attitudes – those who have not been saved will be lost, those who fail to enter into the presence of God will be shut out forever. So we pray that the Lord our Saviour will come as He has said.
‘Amen, Lord Jesus.’
Give thanks for all those who God inspired to write down the words which He gave them and pray that we would continue to be able to study His Word freely, and as a vital part of our every day routine. Pray for this weekend’s festival of Male Voice Praise in the East that it would be an event to really lift up the Name of Jesus. Pray for Pastor Kenny Wilson from Northern Ireland who will be sharing God’s Word and that there would be safety in travel for all those coming from near and far.
